As viral season approaches, we all want to ensure that our preschoolers stay healthy and happy. It can be a real challenge, especially when those pesky bugs start making their rounds. Runny noses, coughs, and fevers can disrupt your child’s routine and leave you feeling helpless. But fear not! With a few simple strategies, we can help protect your little one and keep them feeling their best.  We’ve gathered expert advice and research from reputable sources, both international and local, to share five essential tips for safeguarding yourchild’s well-being.

1. Handwashing, Handwashing, Handwashing!

One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs is good old-fashioned handwashing. Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stress the importance of proper handwashing in preventing the spread of germs. Teach your child to scrub their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. Make it fun by singing a favorite song while washing. Happy birthday is a favorite go-to song for us and makes our kids ready for birthday parties too! This simple habit can go a long way in keeping those nasty bugs at bay.

2. Boost Their Immune System

According to the Philippine Pediatric Society , a strong immune system is vital for children’s health. Prioritize good sleep, a balanced diet with guidance from your child’s pediatrician, and outdoor play with plenty of sunshine (Vitamin D) to ensure your child’s immune system is in top shape.  If your child is a picky eater, consider giving them a daily children’s multivitamin to fill in the gaps but don’t forget to consult with your doctor first!

3. Teach Proper Cough and Sneeze Etiquette

Preschoolers are still learning about social norms, so it’s essential to teach them the right way to cough and sneeze. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasize teaching children proper cough and sneeze etiquette most especially when viral transmission especially COVID 19 is still present and around. Show them how to use tissues or their elbow to cover their mouth and nose to reduce the risk of spreading germs.Discourage them from sharing cups or utensils with others to minimize the risk of germ transmission.

4. Stay Hydrated

The Mayo Clinic recommends adequate hydration as dehydration can result to serious complications. Make sure your preschooler drinks plenty of water throughout the day. You can also offer warm herbal teas or soothing broths when they’re feeling under the weather. Water is the best choice, and limiting sugary drinks is essential for overall well-being.

5. Know When to Keep Them Home

Lastly, use your parental judgment to determine when it’s best to keep your child home from preschool. If they have a fever, diarrhea, or are vomiting, it’s best to keep them home until they’ve been symptom-free for at least 24 hours. This helps prevent the spread of illness to other children and allows your child to rest and recover.
